An earthquake and space weather laboratory has been established in the Department of Geology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. This was necessitated by the deployment of a multi-million Research and Development Space Weather and Earth’s Movement Monitoring Magnetometer by the Center for Atmospheric Research under the auspices of Ministry of Science and Technology, Abuja in the month of May 2019. This equipment measures the total field of the Earth’s magnetic field, monitors the space environment including satellite altitudes, and Earth’s movement on real time basis at 1-second interval and transmits same at near real time to dedicated server for global usage. This is sequel to the equipment research grant jointly by UNESCO and the World Academy of Science for Earthquake Monitoring in Nigeria given to the Department in 2007.

Since inception in May 2019,  the laboratory has recorded some events.
